How is a natal chart calculated?

A calculator that only asks for a birth date can return a Sun sign, but the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the house cusps require a fact a birthday alone never supplies: the exact clock minute and the exact longitude and latitude of birth, because those determine which arc of sky was sitting on the eastern horizon at that instant. The asymmetry is the whole point. The Sun's position barely shifts across a single day, so roughly one person in twelve alive shares any given Sun sign — it is the least individualized data point in a chart. The Ascendant can move through a full sign in under two hours and differs from one city to the next at the same clock time, which makes it the most personal coordinate in the chart and, not coincidentally, the one most free tools skip: it is the one that costs an extra field of input. What a complete chart actually contains, and why each part is there

The Sun through Pluto are positioned from an ephemeris — actual orbital computation — rather than the tidy thirty-degrees-per-sign schematic that generic sign tables assume. That difference is not cosmetic. Because the calendar year and the tropical year are not perfectly synced, the dates on which the Sun crosses from one sign into the next drift by up to a day or two from year to year, so a person born on a cusp date can be filed under the wrong sign by a fixed table and correctly by a real ephemeris.

The Ascendant and the Midheaven are the two angles, and both are functions of time of day rather than date. The Ascendant is the ecliptic degree crossing the eastern horizon at the moment of birth; the Midheaven is the degree culminating on the upper meridian overhead. Neither can be derived from a calendar day alone.

The house cusps come from one of two methods astrologers genuinely disagree about. Placidus divides the diurnal and nocturnal arcs by time, which is why its houses come out uneven — and why it degrades mathematically inside the polar circles, where the required arcs cannot be trisected and the system has no valid answer. Whole-sign houses are the older Hellenistic method: one full zodiac sign is one house, counted from the sign of the Ascendant, with no such breakdown. The wheel also carries three points that a date-only tool typically omits, and here they are drawn by default. The lunar nodes are the two places where the Moon's orbital plane crosses the ecliptic — north, or ascending, and south, or descending; this page reports the mean node, which differs from the true, osculating node by a few degrees. Chiron is a centaur minor planet orbiting between Saturn and Uranus, positioned from real ephemeris data rather than estimated. Black Moon Lilith is not a body at all but the mean apogee of the Moon's elliptical orbit — the empty focus — which is distinct from any asteroid of a similar name.

Why the birth time and place change more of the chart than the date does

The Ascendant tracks the Earth's rotation, measured as sidereal time at a specific longitude, so on average about four minutes of clock time moves it by one degree. That rate is not even, though. Because the ecliptic is tilted against the celestial equator, some signs rise faster than others at a given latitude — the phenomenon the ancients called the signs of long and short ascension — and the effect grows stronger the farther the birthplace sits from the equator. So a rounded or uncertain birth time does not merely blur the Ascendant by a degree; it can land it in a different sign entirely, and it can shift which house a planet falls into even when that planet's own zodiac position has not moved at all.

The honest boundary runs the other way for the slow planets. Jupiter through Pluto travel so little in a day that their sign — and often their house too, as long as they are not sitting on a cusp — stays put even with an approximate time. That is the real limit of what a missing birth time costs: it puts the angles and the houses in doubt while leaving the outer-planet signs intact.

Why the calculation needs a real ephemeris and automatic time-zone handling

Planets do not move at a constant rate. Their orbits are elliptical and they trace retrograde loops from a geocentric view, and Mercury and Mars in particular vary considerably in apparent speed, so an accurate degree needs genuine orbital computation rather than a fixed daily increment. A fixed rate is what produces the cusp-date errors described above.

Time zones are the second quiet trap. Turning a local birth clock time into universal time means knowing which time-zone rule was actually in force at that place on that date — and that record is genuinely messy: wartime double summer time, countries that adopted or dropped daylight saving in different decades, standard offsets that were redrawn. No person can be expected to carry those rules in their head, so the calculator resolves them automatically from a historical zone database instead of asking for a raw UTC offset.
