Element (triplicity) — Astrology glossary
An element, also called a triplicity, is one of four groupings that divide the twelve zodiac signs into sets of three sharing a basic temperament: fire, earth, air, and water. The term triplicity reflects that each element contains exactly three signs spaced evenly around the zodiac. Elements describe how a sign approaches the world at the most fundamental level, fire through action and enthusiasm, earth through practicality, air through ideas and contact, and water through emotion. They are one of the two main ways signs are classified, alongside modality. In a natal chart, counting how many planets fall in each element reveals a person's dominant cognitive and emotional style and where they may be lacking. For example, a chart heavy in water signs but empty of air suggests someone who feels situations deeply but struggles to detach and analyse.
