Grand cross — Astrology glossary

A grand cross is a chart pattern made of four planets in two oppositions that also square one another, forming a closed square of tension, usually within a single modality. In a natal chart it describes a person pulled in four directions at once, with strong drive but a tendency to stall as competing pressures cancel out. It matters because it concentrates enormous energy that can either scatter or, once channelled, sustain remarkable resilience. For example, a cardinal grand cross can give someone who starts many ambitious projects yet struggles to let any one take priority. Astrologers regard it as one of the most demanding patterns, often describing people who only find their footing after learning to work with the strain rather than against it.
