Outer (generational) planet — Astrology glossary

Outer planets are Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, the slow-moving bodies beyond Saturn. Their orbits are so long, from roughly eighty-four years for Uranus to almost two hundred and fifty for Pluto, that they linger in each sign for years or even decades. As a result everyone born within the same stretch of time shares the same outer-planet signs, which is why they are called generational: their sign placements describe broad cultural moods rather than individual traits. They matter at the personal level mainly through the house they occupy and the aspects they make to the faster planets and angles, which localise their themes of upheaval, dissolution, or transformation. For example, a whole generation carries Pluto in Scorpio, but its meaning becomes personal where Pluto touches an individual's Sun or ascendant.
