Square (aspect) — Astrology glossary
A square is an aspect formed when two planets sit roughly 90 degrees apart in the chart, give or take a few degrees of orb. It is traditionally read as one of the harder aspects: the two planets pull in directions that obstruct each other, producing friction, tension, and a sense of being forced to act. That friction is also why squares are considered engines of growth rather than simple bad luck. The planets share a quality (cardinal, fixed, or mutable) but differ in element, so their methods clash even when their pace matches. In a natal chart, a square marks an area of recurring internal conflict that demands effort to resolve. For example, a Mars square Saturn suggests a person whose drive to act repeatedly meets caution, delay, or self-imposed limits.
