Benefic — Astrology glossary

Benefic is a traditional term for a planet considered naturally helpful or fortunate in a chart. Classical astrology names Venus the lesser benefic and Jupiter the greater benefic, associating them with harmony, growth, ease, and good fortune. The label comes from Hellenistic and medieval practice, where planets were sorted into benefics and malefics to judge whether their influence on a house or another planet was likely to help or harm. It matters because the distinction shapes interpretation: a benefic sitting on an angle or aspecting a sensitive point is read as a supportive signature, though traditional astrologers also weigh its condition, since a poorly placed benefic delivers less. For example, Jupiter in the second house of resources is often read as a sign of material ease, especially when the planet is otherwise well placed.
