Exaltation — Astrology glossary
Exaltation is the condition of a planet occupying a particular sign, other than the one it rules, where it is considered especially well placed and able to express its best qualities in a refined, honoured form. Unlike domicile, which is about being at home, exaltation is more like being an esteemed guest, the planet operating at a high pitch. The assignments are fixed by tradition: the Sun is exalted in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricorn, Venus in Pisces, and Jupiter in Cancer. Exaltation is one of the essential dignities that strengthen a planet's placement. In a natal chart, a planet in exaltation is read as a strong and elevated part of the person, sometimes idealised. For example, Mars exalted in Capricorn channels its drive into discipline, ambition, and effective long-term effort rather than raw impulse.
