Lunation — Astrology glossary

A lunation is a complete cycle of the Moon's phases, running from one New Moon to the next, lasting roughly 29.5 days. The term also refers to the New Moon itself as the start of that cycle. In a natal chart the lunation a person was born under, found by the angle between Sun and Moon, describes their phase of the lunar cycle and colours how they begin and complete things. It matters because it adds a developmental note beyond Sun and Moon signs alone. For example, someone born just after a New Moon carries a beginning-of-cycle quality, often instinctive and forward-pushing without a clear map. Astrologers also track ongoing lunations as regular markers for timing and reflection.
