Malefic — Astrology glossary
Malefic is a traditional term for a planet regarded as naturally challenging or harmful in a chart. Classical astrology names Mars the lesser malefic and Saturn the greater malefic, linking them with conflict, restriction, loss, and hardship. The category dates to Hellenistic and medieval astrology, which paired malefics against benefics to assess whether a planet's effect on a house or another body was likely to obstruct or damage. It matters because the label colours interpretation, though traditional practice is more nuanced than the name suggests: a malefic in good condition, or operating in its own domain, can act constructively, supplying discipline or drive rather than pure difficulty. For example, Saturn in the tenth house is read not simply as misfortune in career but as slow, demanding, earned advancement that rewards persistence.
