Modality (quadruplicity) — Astrology glossary
A modality, also called a quadruplicity, is one of three groupings that divide the twelve zodiac signs into sets of four according to how they handle action and change: cardinal, fixed, and mutable. The term quadruplicity reflects that each modality contains four signs, one from each element. Where the elements describe a sign's basic temperament, the modalities describe its mode of operating, cardinal signs initiating, fixed signs sustaining, and mutable signs adapting. In a natal chart, counting planets by modality reveals how a person tends to engage with circumstances, whether they start things, hold a course, or adjust. For example, a chart dominated by fixed signs suggests someone who builds momentum slowly and resists changing direction once committed, persistent to a fault, while a strongly mutable chart points to flexibility that can shade into restlessness.
