Ruling planet — Astrology glossary
A ruling planet, or ruler, is the planet traditionally assigned governance over a particular zodiac sign, expressing that sign's nature most directly. Each sign has a ruler: Mars rules Aries, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, and so on, with the modern system adding Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto to Aquarius, Pisces, and Scorpio. The ruler matters because it links a sign to a planet's condition elsewhere in the chart. In a natal chart, the ruler of the sign on a given house cusp, especially the Ascendant, becomes the chart ruler and carries particular weight, its placement and aspects describing how that whole area plays out. For example, if Libra is rising, Venus rules the chart, so Venus's sign, house, and aspects say a great deal about how the person approaches life overall.
