Solar return — Astrology glossary

A solar return is a chart cast for the exact moment each year when the Sun returns to the precise position it held at birth, falling on or near the birthday. It is calculated for that instant and for the place the person is located at the time, which is why some travel to shift the chart's emphasis. The solar return is read as a forecast for the coming year, a snapshot of themes from birthday to birthday. In relation to the natal chart, it matters as an annual overlay: its angles and planetary placements highlight which areas of life will be active. For example, a solar return with several planets in the career sector is typically read as a year when work and public standing come to the foreground.
