Water sign — Astrology glossary

A water sign is one of the three zodiac signs belonging to the water element: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Water is associated with emotion, intuition, and depth, so these signs are typically described as sensitive, perceptive, and attuned to undercurrents others miss. They differ by modality, with Cancer cardinal, Scorpio fixed, and Pisces mutable, which shapes how each channels feeling. Water is considered compatible with earth, which gives it form, and in tension with fire, which can scatter or evaporate it. In a natal chart, water placements show where a person responds through feeling and instinct rather than logic, and where they absorb the moods around them. For example, someone with the Moon and several planets in water signs tends to read a room before a word is spoken, an asset that can tip into being overwhelmed by other people's emotions.
