Aspect — Astrology glossary

An aspect is a meaningful angle between two planets in a chart, measured in degrees around the circle. Common aspects include the conjunction (0 degrees), opposition (180), trine (120), square (90), and sextile (60). Astrologers read aspects as the conversations between planets: how two functions support, strain, or complicate each other. They matter because a chart is not just isolated placements but a web of relationships, and the aspects show how those parts interact. For example, a person with the Moon in a square aspect to Mars, an angle of about 90 degrees, may experience their emotions and their temper pulling against each other, reacting quickly and sometimes regretting it, because the planet of feeling and the planet of drive are working at cross purposes.
