Chart ruler — Astrology glossary
The chart ruler is the planet that rules the sign on the Ascendant, the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. Because the Ascendant sets the framework of the whole chart, its ruling planet is treated as a kind of lead actor, whose sign, house, and aspects carry extra weight in describing the person. To find it, you identify the rising sign and then its traditional ruler. In a natal chart the chart ruler matters because it personalises the Ascendant: it shows how the self that meets the world is steered. For example, someone with Libra rising has Venus as chart ruler, so the placement of Venus, its sign and house, refines how that diplomatic, relationship-oriented Libra surface actually plays out in daily life.
