Essential dignity — Astrology glossary

Essential dignity measures how well a planet operates in a given sign, based on traditional rulership schemes. A planet in its own sign (domicile) or exaltation is said to be strong, acting with ease; one in the opposite placement (detriment or fall) is considered weakened or strained. The system goes back to Hellenistic and medieval astrology and assigns each sign rulers, exaltations, and lesser dignities like triplicity and terms. In a natal chart, dignity matters because it shades how reliably a planet expresses its function: Venus in Libra, its own sign, is read as smoother in matters of relationship and taste, while Mars in Libra, its detriment, is thought to act with less directness. It is one filter among many, not a verdict on the whole chart.
