Luminary — Astrology glossary

Luminary is the traditional term for the two brightest bodies in the chart, the Sun and the Moon, treated as a distinct pair separate from the planets proper. Older astrology grouped them this way because they are the lights of day and night, and they carry the greatest weight in interpretation: the Sun signifies the core self, vitality, and purpose, while the Moon signifies instinct, emotional needs, and the inner life. The pairing matters because many techniques hinge on the luminaries specifically, such as judging which one rules the chart by sect, or reading the phase of the Moon relative to the Sun at birth. For example, a person born just after a new moon has the Sun and Moon close together, a luminary relationship that traditional astrologers interpret as a blending of conscious aim and instinct.
