Applying aspect — Astrology glossary

An applying aspect is one that is still forming, where the faster-moving planet is approaching the exact angle to the slower one rather than moving away from it. The distinction comes from the planets' motion: as they travel through the zodiac at different speeds, an aspect first tightens toward exactness, then loosens. While the angle is closing, the aspect is applying; once past exact, it is separating. Applying aspects are traditionally read as carrying more force, because the contact is building rather than fading, and the matter they describe is treated as still developing. In a natal chart, an applying aspect can suggest a theme that intensifies or comes to a head, as opposed to one already integrated. For example, a Moon applying to a square with Mars points to emotional reactions that build toward a flashpoint.
