Ascendant (rising sign) — Astrology glossary

The Ascendant, or rising sign, is the zodiac sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. Because the horizon shifts roughly every two hours, it depends heavily on exact birth time, and it marks the cusp of the first house. Astrologers treat it as the chart's front door: the style a person leads with, the impression made before they say anything. It matters because two people born on the same day can come across very differently if their Ascendants differ. For example, someone with Leo rising tends to enter a room with visible confidence and warmth, while a Virgo rising of the same birthday may seem reserved and observant at first, regardless of their underlying Sun sign.
